Summer Reading List

Looking for your next read? Check out this awesome summer reading list for some fun books sure to make you a little happier!

Ever since I was a little girl I have absolutely loved to read. I could be found spending days reading The Babysitters Club, The Boxcar Children and Nancy Drew. I absolutely loved getting lost in stories, traveling to new places in my mind, and experiencing what I was going through by reading about it in books. I remember picking out a fictional book to mirror whatever I was going through to help me mentally prepare and get excited. Turns out, reading a book about a place you have recently visited or about some activity you recently enjoyed can prolong the feel-good effects of that vacation or memory! Looks like I was on to a happiness hack even as a small child.

Here are some of my favorite books to add to your summer reading list:

If you like chick-lit

What exactly is chick-lit? Well, it is kind of what it sounds like- literature for chicks. This is the text version of chick-flicks (think romantic comedies). While I enjoy reading some non-fiction and some more serious novels, chick-lit is the perfect genre for light, summer reading.

Ladies’ Night by Mary Kay Andrews

The story is about a 38 year old woman named Grace who is a popular lifestyle blogger. You’ll follow her journey of ending her marriage, losing her old lifestyle and blog, and the new life and friends she makes at “divorce recovery” therapy. I could not put down this book- with many plot twists and turns and a focus on lifestyle blogging it was a great book! Perfect to toss in your beach bag or devour while sipping margaritas on your back deck.

If you loved Ladies’ Night, you might also like Summer Rental also by Mary Kay Andrews (and a another perfect summer read!)

Love the One You’re With by Emily Giffin

This is a great book that reminds you to appreciate the one you are with and also gives a look back into the feelings of the one that got away. I think we all have a love in our lives who “got away” or ended up not being the one we were meant to be with. This books explores those feelings while the main character Ellen navigates a brand new marriage. It also takes place in New York and will make you crave a visit to NYC (or maybe I’m just slightly biased because I call this great city my home!)

You may have heard of Emily Giffin from her other popular chick-lit books Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Baby Proof, and a whole bunch of others.

If you want to see the movie after

Nothing is better than reading a great book and then getting a chance to see it transformed into a movie. I love going to the movies as much as I love reading (plus there’s popcorn!) It is always fun to see if what the filmmakers created matches the visions of your head, critiquing

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

I absolutely loved this book! I thought the movie left a lot to be desired, but this book was a serious page turner. I started reading in on the Metro North train back to my home state of CT from NYC one weekend I was going home (yes, I’m that girl reading Girl on the Train on the…. train!) It is a dark mystery story that looks into the lives of people witnessed out the train window and how all of their lives end up intertwined. There’s mystery, there’s romance, there’s plot twists- it has all the makings of a page-turner. The book takes place in London but the movie version actually takes place in NYC and on that very Metro Train I started reading it on which made me have to see the movie!

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

You may have already seen the movie, but this is still a must-read book. A mystery novel that borderlines psychological thriller and gives you the dose of chick lit you crave, this book is a can’t put down page turner. Perfect for binging on a long road trip or summer travels. If you haven’t seen the movie, I highly suggest reading the book before you catch the flick.

Did you love Gone Girl? You might also like Dark Places and Sharp Objects, both also by Gillian Flynn.

The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

This is a classic coming-of-age novel that I could read over and over again. Even if you’ve read it a million times before, you will find something new to fill your heart. One of my all time favorite quotes comes from this book:

And in that moment, I swear we were infinite is one of my all time favorite literary quotes. Click through to see my summer reading list (including Perks of Being a Wallflower!)

“And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.” Any book with a magical line like that is a novel that can be read over and over again. It is an easy read that will give you something different depending on what stage of life you are in.

If you want to give it as a gift

The Prayer Box by Lisa Wingate

This is just such a special book. I have given it once as a gift, complete with a prayer box for my friend that I gave it too. My mom after reading this book gave me my own prayer box for Christmas one year. If you need to give a sentimental gift that will be cherished forever, pair this book with a prayer box. This book shares the story of a woman discovering an older women who has recently passed on prayer boxes with letters and stories of her entire life. The journey of discovery of the story of the old woman, and the self discovery of the one who finds the letters is truly breathtaking and magical.

Read this, give it as a gift, and keep this book in rotation. I absolutely loved this book.

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert

You may have heard of Elizabeth Gilbert from her super popular book turned into a movie Eat, Pray, Love. This book speaks (loudly!) to anyone who has a creative mind and is involved in going through the creative process. If you want to find your passion and sing it from the rooftops, this book is for you. I suggest this under books to give as a gift as I think that in the right hands this book can be extremely powerful. Gift it to someone who you know is looking for the reason to take their passion or art to the next level.

  1. What a good call on Gone Girl… I did it in the opposite order – movie first, then book. I was on the fence on the book, but you and a couple friends convinced me to read it. I kinda wish I had read it first, it does such a good job of building the suspense! And there are a few pretty entertaining points that they couldn’t fit into the movie (no spoilers I promise!). Anyways, this one is definitely worth the read even if you’ve seen the movie.

  2. I have read some of these and loved them! I am going to check out the prayer box for an upcoming birthday I need to get a gift for, thanks for the great idea.

  3. I love Emily Griffen! I haven’t read any of her books in a while, I’m going to have to get back into those. And Gone Girl was an awesome beach read! I couldn’t put it down. Sharp Objects is another by the same author. A bit creepy but good!

  4. I absolutely inhaled Girl on the Train and Gone Girl. Those are perfect summer beach reads! I have read other books by Mary Kay Andrews and Emily Giffin, so I will am putting those on my summer reading list right now!
