I’m sure that you are familiar with the 10 commandments, or have least heard of them. You know, the list of 10 commandments from the Bible like Thou shalt not kill and honor thy mother and thy father. Well today, I want to challenge you to create your own set of personal commandments! This time, you will create 12 commandments about your happy life. These are guiding principles of overarching ways you want to be in your life. The fundamental mantras that guide you each and every day, your personal affirmations. This challenge was inspired by one of my favorite happiness gurus, Gretchen Rubin. You can read all about her personal set of commandments here.

To get you started, I am going to share with you my Happy Life Commandments that I created after reading Gretchen’s challenge. I hope you find them inspiring and helpful in creating a list of your own. As you read through mine, start thinking of a list of your own so that you can share some of yours in the comments in the end.

My Happy Life Commandments
1.) Let it go

I put this one first because to me, I need to hear this the most. Often times I find myself harboring on an action or mistake I’ve made for hours, days, weeks after it has happened and feeling some sort of guilt (thanks anxiety.) So will this commandment, I give myself the permission to let it go.
There is a great book on this topic called Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff . . . and It’s All Small Stuff: Simple Ways to Keep the Little Things from Taking Over Your Life. I keep this one handy for when I need a reminder to let it all go.

2.) Take a breath

Sometimes it is just as simple as taking a moment to take a breath. Pause, breathe, and reflect on what is happening.

3.) Be Alexandra

I think that most people can relate to this one (obviously by replacing your own name with where it says mine!) Sometimes you just need to give yourself permission to be yourself. As I am getting older and wiser, I am learning things about myself that make me happy. Like I really value sleep, I don’t like to go out for crazy wild nights every single weekend, and that I prefer to be home a lot of the time. That I need some alone time to recharge after particularly social weekends. And that’s okay! I give myself permission to just be myself.

4.) Smile more

They say that just putting a smile on your face, even if you’re faking it, can elevate your mood. I have also found that smiling more at strangers I pass on the street makes me feel a little brighter and I hope brightens their day as well. It is something so simple that I can do each and every day.

5.) Be silly

I admit it, I can be a little Type-A control freak. Blame it on the fact that I’m an only child but I do like things my way and I can take them a little too seriously.  My boyfriend is amazing at getting me to lighten up, laugh a little, and stop caring what people think! Recently, he purchased one of those Nintendo NES Classic Mini‘s Talk about bringing it back to the 90’s and acting like kids together! Nothing like a little Super Mario Brothers on a Nintendo to make you happy.

6.)Think optimistically

Try to always focus on how things will go your way and will go right, not how they can go wrong. A simple change in your attitude and utilization of the power of positive thinking goes a LONG way.

7.) Dream big

I am totally and completely obsessed with The Law of Attraction. Part of this is dreaming big: asking the Universe for what you want and not worrying how you are going to get there. Whatever dream you have, just envision it already in your life and you will slowly but surely start making your way there.

8.) Start now

This goes along with dreaming big. I think that super successful people are just the one’s who had the guts to get out there and make things happen. Think of something, anything you can do today to make your goal a bit more of a reality.

9.) LOVE

Love everyone, in all ways, and in all forms. My personal commandment is to love myself, love my boyfriend, love my family, love my friends, and have love for all of humankind. We can all use a little love in our lives.

10.) Live in the moment

Mindfulness is a trending word right now, but what it simply means is being present in the current moment that you are. Feel the breeze on your face, put your cellphone away at dinner, and really enjoy the moment you are in. Life is made in these small moments! We are often so caught up in waiting for something grand to happen that we forget that life is in the little things. Some of the best stories come from the unplanned moments and just going with the flow.

11.) Count your blessings

Cultivate the Attitude of Gratitude! Giving thanks for everything in your life each and every day goes a long way. There are people with a whole lot less than you who are consistently living happier lives simply by being grateful for the things they do have.

12.) I can, I will

I end with this one, because this is what I want to remember once I recite my personal commandments and charge into the world to make a difference. If I believe in myself, I know I can achieve anything that I want!

  1. This is brilliant! I’ve been trying to find a way to list a few mantras without it looking like just another old list on my desk. But something to, pull it together into something “more”. This is perfect! This might be my project later today! Thanks, this is awesome!

  2. Hi Alexandra,

How fun is this! I absolutely love this idea so much.

We talk about affirmations and mantras, so why not think of them as commandments. My favorites are to dream big and live in the moment – which I believe are the keys to success. Keeping your eyes on the horizon, but living in the now and doing everything you can to get there.

    Off to write my own!

Awe thank you for your kind words Jessica. I can totally relate to feeling down after busting my butt on my blog too- stay motivated!

You can do it! I started off with much larger sentences and focused on the key words/ phrases and limited myself to 12. I think a challenge would be to pick the top 5!

  3. I love this! I have been doing this recently – both for my family and I – to make each day full by living through my values instead of my goals or to-do list. Of course goals are important but not the heart stuff of life. One commandment: nature, every day!

You definitely should! It can take a few days or weeks to come up with a finalized list but it is a great reminder of your core values and goals.

  4. I love #5: Be silly. That is my secret for sure! I am so type-A, and that sometimes makes me high strung and stressed. Letting loose and goofing around, dancing, and singing are how I stay happy. 🙂

  5. I love this! I think I should tape “Let it go” to my mirror. On a pretty pink sticky note so I see it every morning! 🙂

Yes! It is so powerful. I actually created this list a few months ago and was so excited to read it again once I started my blog!
