Let that thought sink in for a moment… everything that you do right now in your life, you once had to do for the very first time. If you are anything like me, or most of the people out there, trying new things can be completely overwhelming and scary. But that simple thought has motivated me into trying so many new things.
Our brains tend forget the first time we do something if it went smoothly and nothing stuck out as being extremely bad or very good. But all of the things we do each and every day we once did for the first time. It is really a mind blowing thought! Think about the first time you went to the new grocery store in your neighborhood and had no idea where items were – now you could walk the aisles with your eyes closed. Or this first time you got a pedicure at the local nail salon… I bet you had no idea what was happening but now? You can’t even remember that day.
Here are three ways to get over the fear of trying something new for the very first time:

Bring a friend
Having a trusty side kick can make trying something new so much easier, plus provide you quality time with your significant other, family member, or friend! New experiences tend to bond people together and bring them closer, so this is a technique that has multiple positive happy life effects. The other person can be new to the place or activity just like you, or if you feel more comfortable, find someone who has been there or done what you want to do.
This especially applies to traveling to new destinations! I love going on trips to new places with my boyfriend or a group of friends, because it makes the experience a lot more fun and less scary than if I was traveling alone. Check out my post on all-inclusive vacations if you are considering trying a new Caribbean island for the first time- you can get some great deals.
Try a practice run first
A lot of my anxiety about trying new things has to do with the logistics before I even get there. How long is it going to take to get there? What if I can’t find the building or suite I need to go to? Are there restaurants or places I can grab a coffee near the place? What happens if I arrive early, can I wait somewhere comfortably? To put a stop to all these anxieties- arrange a practice run! This is especially helpful when starting a new job, visiting a new doctor’s office, or any other activity that has some built in nervousness surrounding it already. By doing a practice run, you can scope out the area as well as answer any of the questions stirring around in your mind. And who knows, you may discover something else new that you want to try!
Get a great deal to motivate you
I don’t know about you, but I LOVE a great bargain! I am more enticed to try new restaurants or experiences when I have gotten a great deal. Recently, my boyfriend and I tried the Escape the Room fad (which I am now OBSESSED with) and was able to find a great deal using Groupon. If you haven’t heard of it, it is a site that offers deals such as 50% off restaurant vouchers or great deals on mani-pedis. When I was strapped for cash, Groupon afforded me opportunities to get haircuts or restaurant meals as discounted price. Now, I love using Groupon to try new things! The best part is that the money you pay never expires, only the promotional value. Give it a go!
Research, research, research!
I am totally obsessed with reading up on anything and everything I want to try for the first time. Gathering information for me is part of the fun of trying something new. I like to read up on websites, books, blogs, and reviews for new places or experiences I want to try. With the Internet- it is SO easy to find someone or something who has done what you wanted to do.
A great source for travel related reviews is TripAdvisor.com. I don’t go on vacation or to a new city without spending some serious time catching up on the reviews on Trip Advisor. It is a great resource to discover traveler favorites and make you feel like more of a local on your trips!
