New year, new me is a common hashtag around the internet during the start of the new year. I’ve put together a roundup of 8 of the best books I’ve read that can change your life in 2018!

I absolutely love to read (especially the self-help genre) and find reading to be a way to satisfy my questioner tendency. Gretchen Rubin, one of my favorite happiness gurus, wrote a book on The Four Tendencies and how everyone deals with inner and outer expectations. I am for sure, a questioner.
Anyways, since researching things to death and obsessing over things I am interested is a fun quirk of being a questioner, it is no surprise that I have a plethora of self-help book suggestions to totally transform your life! Try one, try them all, but I guarantee any one of them will teach you something new in some area of your life this year.
8 Life-Changing Books
Are you single? Are you single and looking to be in a fulfilling relationship with the love of your life? If you answered yes to both of these questions, if you do NOTHING else for yourself this year, please buy and read this book. I read this book about three years ago, and it is no coincidence that I met my current boyfriend a little less than three years ago. This book is truly a life-changing book for your love life. My coworker has a copy of her book that she got before she met the love of her life and she is currently getting married. THIS STUFF WORKS! It is all about becoming your best self, living your best life, and attracting via the Law of Attraction, self-confidence, and happiness the love of your life.
I am going to jump down off my soap box now, but seriously, if you are looking for love and haven’t read this book you are seriously missing out. Also makes a great gift for your single sister/best friend/aunt and the list goes on…
Fittingly enough, my second life changing book is another Law of Attraction book! If you liked The Secret but feel like you need a more actionable plan of attack, this book is perfect for you. Rhonda Byrne outlines 28 days of practicing the Law of Attraction to start bringing the future you desire into your life.
Okay, last Law of Attraction book on this list and this one I will admit is a little woo-woo. So if you aren’t into the Law of Attraction, this might be a little too much woo-woo for you. But Esther and Jerry Hicks are two very famous names in the Law of Attraction game, so if you want to know the history and origins of everything related to the Law of Attraction, this book is an amazing read. If you are still just getting your feet wet, I wrote a great beginners guide to the Law of Attraction. Manifest away loves!
My dad gave me this book for Christmas one year shortly after graduating college and moving to NYC. I admit, I let it sit on my shelf for a while before I finally sat down to read it and realized that this guy had a LOT of great advice. It’s a no BS 6 week approach to working on your finances. I know their are a lot of resources/blog posts/experts out there but this is one of the best finance books/advice I have read (and I work in finance!).
This book encouraged me to open an online savings account as the rate is 14x a traditional savings account (this Barclays Dream account has an APR of 1.3%– way more than my regular bank savings account!)
Bottom line is if you struggle with finances, give this book a shot.
This is another must read book! Gary Chapman explains that we each have our own love language: the way we like to receive love. There are five distinct love languages: words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. The kicker? We all tend to give love in the way we like to receive love, but the person we are showing love to most likely has a different love language! This is why some of our best intentions seem to fall by the wayside. This book is helpful in figuring out not only your love language, but the love languages of those around you. It doesn’t need to be romantic love either! There are many types of relationships where love languages come into play. In fact, there is another version of this book about appreciation in the workplace that is also worth a read!
Okay, so I might have told a little white lie… this book kind of also talks about the Law of Attraction: but in terms of healing your life and health! I honestly don’t think I can give it any higher praises that the top customer rating on Amazon, so head on over there and see what all the fuss is about!
All of us worry to some extent and according to Robert Leahy, 38% of people worry every day. Personally, I think that number is a lot higher, given the sheer amount of anxious thoughts that fill my brain every day! This books caters mostly to general anxiety and gives seven steps to cut worry out of your day to day life. It is a great read about acknowledging the worry, why we worry, and how to stop it from interfering in your life. Definitely worth a read… I think I’ll re-read this one asap!
I recall my mom having this book many years ago when she was a teacher, which is a VERY stressful job. Turns out, this book even 15 years later still rings true and might be even more important in our technologically driven world that thrives on likes and shares. The book is divided into… pun intended… small actions that you can take to improve your life and help focus yourself. The whole book reminds me very much of one of my favorite sayings (which I heard from my favorite happiness guru Gretchen Rubin) “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.” i.e. Don’t sweat the small stuff!
Everyone has been going crazy for Shonda Rhimes “Year of Yes” so I decided to give it to go. Honestly I wasn’t crazy about it but I do love the idea of a year of yes, facing your fears, etc. I feel like she does a lot of humble bragging and repeats herself over, and over, and over but it was on sale for $1.99 so I gave it a whirl.
If you are looking for an interesting year of yes read, I highly recommend My Year with Eleanor: A Memoir by Noelle Hancock. It is much more applicable to the average person looking to read an inspirational book of this nature. So whether or not you decide to try a year of yes of your own, this book will give you the courage and desire to face your fears and seek your dreams!
In my post Want a happy life? Surround yourself with Positive Affirmations I suggested buying a daily desk calendar with daily positive quotes and affirmations. This is my second year with the Seize the Day daily desk calendar and I am loving it (thanks for the gift again Mom!) I’ve already posted two of the first week’s pages on my cube wall because I loved them so much! If you don’t have time to read the above books, this is a quick and easy way to add a little inspiration to your day each and every day.
What are your must read life changing books?
I made reading two books a month part of my 18 for 2018, so keep the ideas coming!
